The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has summoned MultiChoice Nigeria to justify its proposed increase in subscription fees, set to take effect on March 1, 2025.

The regulatory body has raised concerns over the frequent price hikes by the pay-TV provider and potential violations of consumer rights.

In a statement issued on Monday, the FCCPC announced that it had scheduled an investigative hearing with MultiChoice Nigeria for February 27, 2025, at its headquarters.

The Commission said it is particularly interested in examining whether MultiChoice’s pricing strategy is in line with fair market practices, given that the company operates under different pricing models in other countries.

“MultiChoice has consistently imposed unilateral price increases without sufficient justification. This raises serious concerns about market fairness and consumer protection,” the FCCPC stated.

Citing Sections 32 and 33 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA), the Commission emphasized that it has the authority to investigate and take action against anti-competitive practices.

The FCCPC further warned that if MultiChoice fails to provide a satisfactory explanation for its pricing decisions or is found guilty of unfair market practices, it could face regulatory sanctions, penalties, or corrective measures aimed at protecting Nigerian consumers.

“Should MultiChoice fail to offer a convincing justification, we will not hesitate to impose necessary regulatory actions to prevent market abuse and protect consumers,” the Commission warned.

Additionally, the FCCPC disclosed that it is collaborating with the sector regulator and other agencies to foster a more competitive and fair digital broadcasting market in Nigeria.
