Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has presented Sports Utility Vehicles to all the 20 Local Government chairmen in the state, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening governance at the grassroots.
The presentation, which took place in Abeokuta on Thursday, was carried out amid the Christmas festivities and marked the fulfilment of a pledge earlier made by the governor to support local councils in the discharge of their responsibilities.
Speaking through the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Ganiyu Hamzat, Abiodun commended the chairmen for their roles in delivering democratic dividends to residents at the grassroots.
He assured them of the state government’s continued partnership, stressing that effective local governance remains critical to improving the welfare and quality of life of the people.
According to him, the provision of the vehicles is aimed at enhancing mobility and ensuring that council chairmen are better positioned to reach communities, especially those in rural areas.
Responding on behalf of the chairmen, the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, Ogun State chapter, Dr Mrs Afolasade Adeyemo, described the gesture as timely and commendable.
She expressed appreciation to the governor for keeping his promise and for consistently supporting local governments.
Adeyemo, who is also the Chairman of Odeda Local Government, praised Abiodun’s achievements in education, housing, healthcare and road infrastructure.
She noted that the administration’s ISEYA agenda has continued to reposition the state and improve the living conditions of residents.
She assured that the Local Government chairmen would remain committed to working with the state government to ensure that Ogun State remains a pride to its people and Nigerians at large.
The chairmen also said the vehicles would significantly enhance their capacity to respond to the needs and aspirations of communities across the state, particularly in hard to reach areas.
