British Nigerian two time unified world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, is conscious and in a stable condition following a road traffic accident along the Lagos Ibadan Expressway, the Ogun and Lagos State governments have said.
In a joint statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser on Information to the Ogun State Governor, Kayode Akinmade, and the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, the governments confirmed that the boxer was involved in the accident earlier in the day.
According to the statement, the vehicle conveying Joshua and three other persons reportedly collided with a stationary truck, leading to the death of two occupants.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident and pray that Almighty God grants them the strength to bear this difficult loss,” the governments said.
The statement disclosed that Joshua and another passenger were immediately evacuated to a specialised medical facility in Lagos, where they underwent comprehensive clinical assessments.
“Following comprehensive clinical assessments, doctors have confirmed that both patients are stable and do not require any emergency medical intervention at this time. A full medical team has been assembled and will continue to monitor them closely,” the statement added.
The governments further confirmed that Joshua is conscious and has been in communication with his family since the incident.
They assured the public that the situation is being closely monitored to ensure that all affected persons receive the best possible medical care, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident have commenced.
The Ogun and Lagos State governments also appreciated the concern shown by members of the public and appealed for privacy for Joshua and his family as they continue medical observation and recovery.
