Nigerian comedian and filmmaker, Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has raised concerns over the deductions made by banks on customers’ accounts, urging Nigerians to challenge what he described as unfair charges.

AY, in a post on his verified X handle on Monday, April 1, 2025, questioned how financial institutions continue to declare massive profits while citizens struggle to survive in a difficult economy.

“Where do banks get the trillions they declare as profits every quarter, even in a struggling economy?” AY queried. “The small charges and debits on our accounts need to be challenged. Many of these fees are unique to Nigeria. Why is that?”

The 53-year-old entertainer expressed his frustration over what he termed “silent financial exploitation”, noting that some deductions seem arbitrary and unjustified.

He added, “These charges are one of the many ways Nigerians are being drained financially, yet most people don’t pay attention to them.”

This is not the first time the issue of hidden charges by banks has come under scrutiny. Over the years, customers have complained about fees such as SMS alerts, maintenance fees, and transfer charges, with many questioning the rationale behind these deductions.

With AY bringing the matter into the spotlight, there are growing calls for financial regulators to intervene and ensure clarity and fairness in banking practices across the country.
