Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, has resigned from her position amid the ongoing leadership crisis that has unsettled the legislative body.
Meranda, who made history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly, announced her resignation on Monday, stating that her decision was in the interest of the institution.
“I take a bow as your Speaker,” she declared while addressing lawmakers during a plenary session.
Despite her resignation, the crisis within the Assembly remains unresolved, as the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa has further divided both the lawmakers and the state’s political leadership.
Before stepping down, Meranda received praise from her colleagues, who commended her dedication and leadership style during her brief tenure.
Desmond Olusola Elliot, a lawmaker, expressed gratitude for her service, stating, “You have demonstrated good leadership and led the House well.”
Similarly, Temitope Adewale (Ifako-Ijaiye I) described her as a “heroine of democracy,” adding, “We celebrate you for your quality service. You came, you saw, you conquered. You are a victim of circumstance. This House is in tears.”
The political atmosphere in Lagos remains tense as stakeholders await the next move in the unfolding Assembly power struggle.
