President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially announced the passing of his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died Sunday evening in London at about 4.30 pm after a prolonged illness.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president expressed deep sorrow over the loss and described Buhari as a leader who served Nigeria with unwavering dedication.

President Tinubu has spoken with the late president’s widow, Mrs Aishat Buhari, to offer his condolences and support to the grieving family.

As part of the federal government’s mourning protocol, the president has directed that all national flags across Nigeria and at foreign missions be flown at half-staff in honour of the departed statesman.

He has also ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom immediately to accompany the remains of the former president back to the country.

Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023 and had earlier led the country as a military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon.
