Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, citing deepening internal crisis and leadership disputes within the party.
The resignation, which took effect on Friday, January 23, 2026, was disclosed in a statement signed by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
According to the statement, Yusuf communicated his decision through a formal letter addressed to the Chairman of the NNPP in Diso Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State.
In the letter, the Governor expressed appreciation to the party for the support and opportunity given to him since he joined in 2022. He said his decision was taken after careful reflection and was guided solely by the need to protect the interest of the people of Kano State.
Yusuf attributed his exit to persistent internal disputes and unresolved leadership crises that have continued to plague the party at both state and national levels. He noted that many of the disagreements are already subjects of litigation in various courts across the country.
According to him, the prolonged crisis has weakened internal cohesion within the NNPP and widened divisions among members, creating uncertainty and disenfranchisement that could undermine effective governance.
“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party of my decision to resign my membership of the party,” the Governor said. “In recent times, the party has been confronted with persistent internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and ongoing legal processes.”
He added that his resignation was not borne out of bitterness or ill will but was taken in good faith, with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and the progress of Kano State.
The statement further revealed that the Governor’s resignation was followed by the exit of 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen across the state, signalling a major shake up within the party’s structure in Kano.
Reacting to the development, the NNPP acknowledged receipt of the resignation letter. The Secretary of the Diso Chiranchi Ward, Hon Kabiru Zubairu, commended Governor Yusuf for his achievements while in office, particularly in infrastructure development, urban renewal, health, education, and economic empowerment.
Zubairu admitted that the party has been battling internal crisis and said the leadership had no choice but to respect the Governor’s decision.
