A fresh political confrontation has erupted between Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and former Governor, now Senator representing Ogun East, Chief Gbenga Daniel, over the Federal Government’s takeover of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED).

Daniel, in an open letter, accused Abiodun of neglecting state-owned institutions, insinuating that the federalization of TASUED was a move borne out of failure rather than strategic governance.

He alleged that the governor had abandoned the education sector, allowing institutions like TASUED to slip from state control.

However, the Ogun State government, in a statement signed by Hon. Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to the governor, swiftly dismissed Daniel’s remarks as “political mischief” aimed at stirring controversy.

“Senator Gbenga Daniel’s attempt to discredit the federalization of TASUED is nothing but political posturing. His claims of neglect are false and unfounded.

The governor has consistently prioritized education, with substantial budgetary allocations and infrastructural developments across the state,” Akinmade stated.

The government insisted that TASUED’s transition to a federal institution was a well-thought-out move to ensure equitable distribution of tertiary institutions in Ogun State, emphasizing that it was not due to financial constraints or mismanagement.

“This administration has strengthened the education sector, and TASUED itself has benefited significantly from improved funding and infrastructure. With its new federal status, the university will gain access to TETFUND and increased financial support. Only those driven by political bitterness would oppose such progress,” Akinmade added.

The government also questioned Daniel’s credibility on education matters, pointing out that his tenure as governor was not without its own controversies.

“It is ironic that someone who once held the reins of power but failed to make lasting educational reforms is now attempting to lecture the current administration on governance. The people of Ogun State know better,” the statement read.

“Ogun State is on the path of progress, and no amount of political theatre can change that,” Akinmade concluded.
