A former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has obtained the All Progressives Congress governorship nomination and expression of interest forms ahead of the 2027 election in Nasarawa State, declaring that he will not step down for any consensus arrangement.

Adamu’s decision sets him on a collision course with Senator Ahmed Wadada, who is widely seen as the preferred successor of Governor Abdullahi Sule.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lafia on Tuesday, the Director-General of the Mohammed Abubakar Adamu 2027 Political Movement, Musa Hussein, said the former police chief was fully prepared to participate in the party’s primary scheduled for May 21, 2026.

He said Adamu’s decision to join the race was driven by his confidence in his popularity and his commitment to democratic principles.

“We are not considering the issue of consensus because we are in this contest to win both the APC primary and the 2027 governorship election,” Hussein said.

“Just today, my principal purchased the expression of interest and nomination forms. He is ready for a free, fair and credible primary, and we are confident of victory.”

Hussein faulted moves by some party leaders to adopt a consensus candidate, describing such actions as unconstitutional and a threat to internal party democracy.

According to him, the APC constitution recognises only direct primaries or consensus agreed upon by all aspirants, stressing that unilateral endorsement of any candidate is not valid.

He also raised concerns over alleged intimidation of party officials and public office holders to support a particular aspirant, warning that such practices could undermine the credibility of the process.

“A governorship primary is a democratic contest, not a coronation. Every aspirant deserves a level playing field,” he added.

Hussein called on the national leadership of the party to intervene by ensuring that due process is followed and that the primary election remains transparent and free from interference.
