At least 18 persons, including a personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), were killed on Saturday evening in a horrific accident involving multiple vehicles along the Ikorodu-Sagamu road, specifically at the Gbaga area of Ogun State.
The spokesperson of the FRSC, Florence Okpe, who confirmed the incident, revealed that the crash involved seven vehicles.
According to her, the vehicles included a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number AGL 752 YC, a DAF truck marked T14007L, a Honda car bearing number HT680, an unregistered DAF truck, a pick-up van marked STF 10204, and two motorcycles with registration numbers AGG 448 Q and PKA 214 WS.
Okpe disclosed that “the accident occurred due to wrongful overtaking by the driver of the Hiace bus, which led to a head-on collision with one of the DAF trucks.”
The tragedy escalated during rescue operations when an unregistered DAF truck, approaching the scene, suffered a brake failure. The truck rammed into the rescue site, killing one of the FRSC officials who was actively involved in the rescue efforts.
“In the process of ongoing rescue, an unregistered DAF truck lost control as a result of brake failure and ran into the rescue scene,” Okpe explained. “Tragically, one of our officers, who was part of the rescue team, was killed instantly.”
She further noted that the out-of-control truck also crashed into a parked pick-up van, the Honda car, and the two motorcycles, compounding the already deadly scene.
