The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

This was announced by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. The declaration comes in continuation of the seven-day national mourning period earlier announced by the Presidency.

According to the Minister, the holiday is a mark of respect for the former president’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development, national unity, and governance.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” Tunji-Ojo stated. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”

Citizens have been urged to use the day to honour Buhari’s memory by promoting peace, patriotism, and national cohesion, in line with the vision he pursued while in office.

As previously announced, national flags are to fly at half-mast throughout the mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13.

The Federal Government also extended condolences to the family of the late President, the government and people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, while praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.

President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 2015 to 2023, died recently after a brief illness. His passing has drawn tributes from leaders and citizens across the country and beyond.
