Former Governor of Ogun State and Senator representing Ogun Central, Ibikunle Amosun, has expressed profound grief over the death of renowned industrialist and elder statesman, Chief Olatunde Ayinla Abudu, who passed away in the early hours of Monday, at the age of 96.

In a heartfelt tribute titled “Eja nla lo l’omi: The Passing of a Great Man”, Amosun described the loss as monumental, stating that Chief Abudu’s death marked the fall of a towering figure in Nigeria’s socio-political and economic landscape.

“This is a great loss to Egbaland, Ogun State, and the entire country,” Amosun said. “Chief Abudu was a man of great repute, whose life was defined by service, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the development of his people. Nigeria has lost a pillar of progress and a symbol of integrity.”

Amosun highlighted Abudu’s significant contributions across diverse sectors including law, education, health, and business.

He noted that the deceased elder statesman belonged to a visionary generation of Egba leaders who played transformative roles in the development of their communities and Nigeria at large.

“Chief Abudu was among the distinguished generation of Egba sons who used their knowledge, wisdom, and resources to shape the future of our land,” he stated.

As the Mayegun of Egbaland and the Seriki of Oke-Ona Egba, Abudu was known for championing peace, unity, and community development.

He founded notable institutions such as Midland Galvanising Limited and NobelHouse College in Abeokuta, becoming a beacon of industrial growth and educational advancement.

Amosun recalled the pivotal role Chief Abudu played during his tenure as governor of Ogun State between 2011 and 2019, describing him as a dependable elder whose wisdom was critical in navigating complex issues.

“His guidance, especially on matters involving the four traditional sections of Egbaland, was instrumental. He was always calm, peace-loving, and offered statesmanlike advice during some of the most delicate moments of our administration,” Amosun recounted.

The former governor also lauded Abudu’s efforts in fostering elite social cohesion through his involvement with the Abeokuta Club, where he served as a founding member, trustee, and life president.

“Through the Abeokuta Club, Chief Abudu provided a platform for the unity and excellence of Egba elites. He believed in the power of collective strength and worked tirelessly to preserve the cultural heritage of his people,” Amosun added.

Concluding his tribute, Amosun prayed for Allah (SWT) to grant the departed eternal rest in Aljannah Firdaus and offered his condolences to the Abudu family.

“Adieu, Chief Olatunde Abudu. You were more than a father figure; you were a guiding light to generations. Your legacy is immortal. You will be sorely missed,” Amosun stated.
