A 46-year-old health worker, Akinola Oyabiyi, has been shot dead by suspected kidnappers in the Eleyowo community, near Akure Airport, in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Oyabiyi was reportedly driving home on Tuesday night when the armed men intercepted him around 8 p.m. and opened fire.
A source familiar with the incident disclosed that the victim was suspected to have attempted to escape when the assailants shot him at close range.
“He tried to drive off, but they fired directly at him. He lost a lot of blood before help came,” the source said.
The attackers fled the scene immediately, leaving Oyabiyi in a pool of blood. Despite efforts to rush him to the hospital, he was confirmed dead upon arrival.
This tragic incident comes just weeks after five farmers were killed in the same area and two interns from the Federal School of Agriculture in Akure were abducted last Saturday.
Confirming the development, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Funmi Odunlami, said, “We are still on it.”
