Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police, in the early hours of Monday, took control of the Lagos State House of Assembly amid the ongoing leadership crisis.

Heavily armed security personnel were stationed within and around the assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, to maintain order and prevent any possible breach of peace.

The presence of the security agencies heightened tension as lawmakers prepared to convene for plenary.

Despite the tight security, Speaker Mojisola Meranda arrived at the assembly complex at exactly 11:15 a.m. with her convoy. Upon her arrival, lawmakers reiterated their confidence in her leadership as proceedings commenced.

A lawmaker, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the presence of security operatives as a precautionary measure. “Given the recent developments in the House, it is understandable that security agencies are taking steps to prevent any form of crisis,” he said.

The latest developments stem from the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa by 32 out of the 40 lawmakers on January 13, 2025, while he was reportedly in the United States.

His ouster has since sparked division within the state’s political circles, with members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, holding differing opinions on the matter.
