The Igbein community in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has once again reaffirmed its commitment to cultural preservation as it celebrated the 190th edition of the historic Ogun Ajobo Igbein Egbaland Festival.

The annual festival, deeply rooted in Egba heritage, is centered on the shrine of Ogun, the god of iron and war, which has stood for nearly two centuries at the compound of the late Balogun Osho Ayikondu of the Osho Igbein Mekun Ruling House in Isale Igbein, Abeokuta.

According to historical accounts, Igbein town was once the residence of the leading Army of the Egba Nation, producing the Balogun, the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, from the time of Lisabi.

Notably, Balogun Osho Ayikondu, the first Balogun of Igbein and later the first Balogun of Egbaland (1845–1866), led Egba warriors to victory in several battles, including the Dahomey invasions of 1844 and 1851.

The festival, which continues to attract indigenes, chiefs, and cultural enthusiasts, is more than a ritual. It is a commemoration of the bravery, resilience, and unity of the Egba people, while also serving as a platform to pass down traditions to future generations.

This year’s celebrations are scheduled to begin on Monday, September 22, 2025, with the Bibo Ogun Ilu Igbein event, and climax on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, with the Ayikondu Day celebration at the Balogun Osho Ayikondu Family Compound beside MRS Petrol Station, Isale Igbein, Abeokuta.

The festival features traditional rites, cultural performances, and homage to the Ogun deity, drawing the participation of the Ogboni’s, the Igbein Traditional Council of Chiefs, as well as Egbaland chiefs from Alake’s Palace.
