A young woman in Ogun State has recounted a horrifying ordeal after using an unapproved fibroid treatment that allegedly caused severe internal injuries, leaving her vagina blocked and her life permanently affected.
The case has triggered public outrage and police intervention as more victims come forward.
The victim, who asked to remain anonymous for safety reasons, said she obtained Tumorex, a vaginal insertion product, from a self-styled fertility specialist, Mr. Williams Adetunji. Marketed as a natural fibroid expeller, the drug reportedly contained caustic chemicals that caused lasting damage.
“I bought Enervate capsules and Tumorex on September 6. Days after the first insertion, I noticed a blockage. It was as if something had melted inside me,” she said.
She initially joined a WhatsApp group created for users of the product, where posts showing “expelled fibroid tissue” encouraged her to continue.
“From the first dose, it became very hard to use the device he instructed. When I raised concerns, he insisted I continue. I expelled some tissue, but doctors couldn’t confirm it was fibroid,” she added.
By December, she discovered “thick, cobweb-like flesh” inside her vagina. Medical tests revealed that the substance had caused chemical burns, scarring, and reproductive complications. Surgeons informed her she needed corrective surgery, though her fibroids remained.
Upon confronting Adetunji, the survivor learned of other women with similar experiences, some requiring emergency surgery due to damage to the bladder and rectum. “One woman had severe complications and was rushed to a hospital in Kano. He did not deny it,” she said.
The trauma has affected her mental health and personal life. “I almost committed suicide in November. I lost self-esteem, withdrew from people, and suffered hormone issues. I even lost a 15-month relationship,” she revealed.
At a press conference in Abeokuta, her lawyer, Mr. Hassan John Yakubu, described the case as a “matter of urgent criminal concern.”
Reading from a petition submitted to the state police commissioner, he said the offences included unlicensed medical practice, distribution of unregistered and harmful drugs, grievous bodily harm, impersonation, and reckless endangerment of life.
“This is a public safety emergency that endangers women across Ogun State and beyond. We urge the Nigeria Police Force to investigate immediately, arrest and prosecute the suspect, and prevent further distribution,” Yakubu said.
He added that the legal team would provide medical reports, laboratory findings, witness statements, and contacts of affected individuals to aid the investigation.
Human rights advocate and broadcaster Desmond Nwachukwu, who first escalated the matter, confirmed that Adetunji had been arrested.
“I initially tried to resolve this quietly, but due to his hostility, I involved RRA & Associates to pursue justice,” Nwachukwu said.
Yinka Folarin, Vice President of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), pledged support for the survivor and called on other victims to come forward.
“We will stand by the survivor to ensure justice is served. I call on other victims to be bold and expose this atrocious act,” she said.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed Adetunji’s arrest. Police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi said investigations are ongoing, with complainants identifying him as the seller of the unauthorized drugs.
“He will be charged to court once the investigation is concluded,” Babaseyi added.
