Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed heartfelt condolences to the Nigerian Catholic Church and the global Christian community over the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis, describing him as a beacon of peace and justice.
In a statement issued on Monday, Jonathan noted that Pope Francis’ influence extended far beyond the pulpit, leaving a lasting legacy across multiple facets of humanity.
“I offer my deepest condolences to the Nigerian Catholic Church and the Christian community around the world on the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis, who was the head of the Catholic Church,” Jonathan stated.
He described the late Pontiff as a religious leader whose teachings and actions consistently promoted peace, justice, and equality on the global stage.
“Pope Francis was a religious leader whose impact transcended the pulpit to many other spheres of humanity. He was an advocate for peace, justice and equality around the world,” he said.
Jonathan remarked that Pope Francis’ passing—occurring just a day after he delivered his Easter sermon—was a powerful testament to his unwavering dedication to his calling.
“Pope Francis’ death, a day after offering Easter sermon, speaks of his dedication to service and commitment to faith and service,” the former president said.
He further acknowledged the Pope’s resilience even during his final days.
“Even in his struggling moments, he stayed true to his faith and commitment to his purpose of preaching peace and justice and love across the world.”
Reflecting on the legacy the late Pope leaves behind, Jonathan urged the global community to draw inspiration from his life.
“As we reflect on the vacuum created by his departure, may his life of faith, dedication and service to God continue to inspire us all.”
