President Bola Tinubu has vowed that Nigeria will never degenerate into a one-party state, stressing his commitment to sustaining democratic ideals and pluralism in governance.
Speaking before the joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday as part of the 2025 Democracy Day celebration, Tinubu reiterated the importance of multiparty democracy in building a stronger, inclusive nation.
“Nigeria will never become a one-party state. That is not democracy,” Tinubu said firmly while addressing lawmakers at the green chamber.
The President, who acknowledged the roles played by various actors in strengthening the nation’s democracy, said it was vital for all political parties to continue playing their roles without fear or intimidation.
“Democracy thrives when all voices, regardless of party or persuasion, are given space to contribute,” Tinubu stated.
Reflecting on the sacrifices of democratic heroes, especially those who fought for freedom during the military era, Tinubu said Nigeria must never forget its history.
“We are here because some paid the price. Let us honour them by strengthening democracy, not weakening it,” he said, referencing the late Chief MKO Abiola and other pro-democracy activists.
The President’s remarks were delivered before an audience that included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and other dignitaries.
Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to listen to the opposition and work with all arms of government for national progress.
“Let no one think power means silence of the opposition. True power listens, engages, and includes,” he added.
