The Kogi State Government has vowed to uncover the circumstances surrounding a jailbreak at the Federal Correctional Center in Konton-Karfe, where 12 inmates escaped in the early hours of Monday.

Sources confirmed that the escapees fled through the tower around 3 a.m. without causing any visible structural damage. However, security operatives have since rearrested one of the fugitives, who is now assisting law enforcement in tracking down the others.

Reacting to the incident, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, described the escape as “alarming and unacceptable,” adding that the state government is working closely with security agencies to get to the root of the matter.

“The theory that these inmates escaped through the tower without any structural damage is deeply concerning. We are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to determine if this was due to negligence, sabotage, or other factors,” Fanwo stated.

Governor Ahmed Ododo has directed the State Security Adviser to collaborate with federal authorities to prevent future security breaches at correctional facilities in the state. The government also reaffirmed its commitment to providing necessary support for security agencies to enhance their operational effectiveness.

Commending the swift response of security operatives, Fanwo urged residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious individuals to the authorities.

“We call on the public to remain alert. Anyone found harboring an escaped inmate will be treated as an accomplice and prosecuted accordingly,” he warned.

Authorities assured that investigations are ongoing and updates will be provided as security agencies intensify efforts to recapture the remaining escapees.
