A 43-year-old man identified as Kazeem from the Edun area of Ilorin, Kwara State, lost his life in a tragic incident on Friday after reportedly jumping into a domestic well under the influence of a hard drug known locally as ‘Colo’ (Colorado).
The disturbing event occurred shortly after Kazeem returned from Eid prayers, according to reports.
Spokesman of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, said the agency received a distress call around 10:29 a.m. alerting them that a man had fallen into a well located at Alapo Compound in the Edun area of Ilorin.
“Our control room received a distress call at about 10:29 hours, reporting that a man had jumped into a well. Our operatives responded swiftly and proceeded to the scene,” Adekunle said.
“Upon arrival, our men successfully recovered the lifeless body of the victim from the well. He was later identified as Kazeem, who reportedly jumped into the well under the influence of Colo shortly after observing the Eid prayer.”
He added that the remains of the victim were handed over to Inspector Babatunde Amos of the ‘C’ Division Police Station, Ilorin. The family of the deceased has yet to formally identify and claim the body.
Commenting on the incident, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade Olumuyiwa, issued a stern warning against drug abuse.
“This is a sad reminder of how drug abuse continues to wreak havoc in our society. We urge residents, especially the youth, to steer clear of substance abuse, as it often leads to irreversible consequences like this,” he said.
