The All Progressives Congress in Lagos State has unveiled its Deputy Woman Leader, Damilola Sonayon-James, as the running mate to the party’s governorship candidate, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The state APC Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, announced the development in a statement on Monday, saying Sonayon-James emerged after extensive consultations and a rigorous selection process involving key stakeholders within the party.
According to Ojelabi, the 41-year-old politician was selected based on her competence, leadership qualities, grassroots appeal, loyalty to the party and capacity to contribute to the continued growth and development of Lagos State.
He described the Hamzat-Sonayon-James ticket as a blend of experience, innovation and grassroots connection capable of advancing the developmental aspirations of Lagos residents.
Ojelabi said, “Sonayon-James distinguished herself through her exceptional commitment to service, unwavering dedication to the party, strength of character, innovative thinking and proven track record of leadership across the public, private and political sectors.”
The APC chairman noted that her emergence followed broad consultations among party leaders, including members of the Governance Advisory Council and other stakeholders.
The announcement sparked celebrations in Badagry, Sonayon-James’ hometown, where supporters welcomed her emergence as a major political milestone for the division.
Ojelabi urged Lagos residents to support the APC ticket, stressing that voting for the party would guarantee continuity, prosperity, inclusive growth and sustained development across the state.
He added that Sonayon-James had built a strong relationship with the people through her dedication to public service, earning her admiration among women and youths, many of whom fondly refer to her as “Sisi Eko of APC.”
Widely known for championing initiatives in agriculture, women empowerment, youth inclusion, education and community welfare, Sonayon-James previously served as Supervisor for Agriculture and Social Services in Badagry West Local Council Development Area.
Before her emergence as Deputy Woman Leader of the APC in Lagos State, she also contested for the chairmanship of Badagry West LCDA.
