Governors Ademola Adeleke of Osun State and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State have jointly initiated peace efforts to address the prolonged boundary conflict between Lagelu and Iwo local government areas of their respective states.

The two leaders met earlier in the week at Governor Makinde’s residence in Ibadan where they resolved to act swiftly in de-escalating tensions. As part of the resolution, both governors directed their deputies to convene and visit the affected areas for immediate engagement with local leaders.

“We must act quickly and decisively,” said Governor Adeleke. “Our people are one, and we must peacefully resolve any outstanding issues. I commend my brother, Governor Seyi Makinde, for this proactive decision. Our Deputy Governors will take up the matter as a matter of urgency.”

The boundary dispute, which has persisted for years, has intensified in recent weeks with reports of raids, attacks, and counterattacks from both sides. Several villages in Iwo Local Government reportedly came under attack, while Lagelu groups have also claimed their communities have been raided.

As part of a broader peace strategy, the two Deputy Governors are also tasked with investigating other related border tensions, particularly the recurring dispute between Orolu Local Government of Osun State and communities in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

The governors jointly called for an end to hostilities and urged residents to embrace peace while awaiting the outcome of federal intervention.

“We appeal for calm and ask all parties to desist from unlawful actions. Conflict resolution must follow due process and the rule of law,” Governor Makinde added.

Although the National Boundary Commission has previously visited the disputed zones and gathered documentary and oral evidence, the commission is yet to release its report—an omission which both governors acknowledged has created a vacuum being exploited by aggrieved groups.
