The Oyo State Executive Council has sanctioned a large-scale infrastructure development plan, approving the immediate construction and rehabilitation of schools across the state.

This initiative, coming just a month after the implementation of the ₦80,000 minimum wage, aims to enhance the learning environment for students and teachers while boosting educational standards.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, confirmed the development.

According to him, the state government’s intervention will focus on perimeter fencing, the construction of toilet facilities, the drilling of solar-powered boreholes, the installation of solar lights, and the procurement of furniture.

A total of 50 contractors have been engaged for the project, which will cost ₦9.97 billion.

Additionally, the Council has approved the second phase of the upgrade of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport to meet the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards.

The second phase of the airport upgrade has been pegged at ₦7.01 billion.

“The governor has maintained that the upgrade of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport to international status will not be compromised, and due diligence will be observed,” the council noted.

As part of the project, aviation experts from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and the Nigerian Air Force have been included in the Airport Upgrade Committee to ensure compliance with industry standards.

Furthermore, the Council approved ₦2.4 billion as compensation for the 32.2km South-East segment of the Senator Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road project.

Oyelade also disclosed that the state government has commenced the second phase of the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery (SAfER), following the success of the first phase, which targeted transportation, food relief, food security, health insurance, and Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises.

The second phase, estimated at ₦2 billion, will focus on subsidized transportation and healthcare.

“The governor expressed satisfaction with the SAfER model in Oyo State, emphasizing that it is a more sustainable and impactful strategy to assist the masses,” Oyelade stated.
