The Peoples Democratic Party has appointed Kabiru Turaki as the chairman of its interim National Working Committee, in a move backed by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.
Turaki’s appointment was announced on Monday during the party’s 103rd National Executive Committee meeting held in Abuja, where stakeholders resolved to constitute a 13-member interim leadership to steer the affairs of the opposition party.
The decision, according to sources at the meeting, followed ongoing internal consultations among key party leaders aimed at stabilising the PDP and repositioning it ahead of future political engagements.
It was gathered that the interim committee would oversee the party’s day-to-day administration pending the conduct of a substantive national convention.
A senior party official, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to lack of authorisation to speak publicly, said the development reflected the influence of the Makinde camp within the party’s current power structure.
“The NEC agreed on the need for an interim leadership to ensure cohesion and direction. Turaki was considered for his experience and acceptability across different blocs,” the source said.
Efforts to get official comments from the party’s national publicity secretary were ongoing as of the time of filing this report.
