The Seventh Annual Children Reading Competition was a remarkable experience, showcasing the profound impact of literacy on young minds. Organized by the SixthSense Initiative and led by Chief Abiodun Lasile, this event stands as a bold response to the concerning decline in reading culture among children.
Chief Lasile’s vision for the competition is grounded in the belief that “readers are leaders,” a philosophy that underscores the importance of nurturing curiosity and critical thinking skills early on.
Through this competition, SixthSense Initiative seeks to mold well-rounded, informed leaders of tomorrow by instilling a love for books and learning.
One of the most commendable aspects of this event is its accessibility. The competition was free, ensuring that children from a diverse range of schools have the opportunity to participate. Over 1,000 students from 100 schools gathered at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (Main Auditorium) in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Held on Friday, October 25, 2024, the event’s theme, “Reading Culture: A Tool for Successful Learning and Self-Actualization within a New Generation,” set the stage for activities that went far beyond a traditional competition, building an experience centered on educational growth, creativity, and self-expression.
The competition featured a diverse range of activities, including reading demonstrations, storytelling sessions, and lectures on the importance of literacy in the digital age.
The book exhibition was another highlight, offering students and schools a chance to explore a variety of literature, from fiction to educational resources, designed to spark their interest in reading.
Awards were also presented, celebrating excellence, dedication, and improvement among the participants. Witnessing the children display such commitment, intelligence, and a passion for learning was truly inspiring. They approached each task with enthusiasm, proving that with the right platform and encouragement, young learners can achieve remarkable feats.
Behind the scenes, a team of dedicated volunteers, including ushers, judges, comperes, and support staff, ensured the event ran seamlessly. Their efforts were evident in every well-organized moment, from crowd management to stage coordination.
Although Chief Lasile was initially called away for an urgent engagement at the palace due to the ongoing Odun Omo Olowu festival, he later returned to personally oversee the event. His brief absence demonstrated the strength of the organizational structure he had put in place, as the competition continued smoothly. When he returned, his presence added a deeper significance to the day, reinforcing his commitment to youth literacy and empowerment.
Adding a touch of tradition and prestige, the event was graced by Oba Prof. Saka Adelola Matemilola, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, along with the queens and other esteemed guests. Each participating school received certificates, and the children took home free books and souvenirs, all designed to further inspire their interest in reading.
