A political actor and promoter of the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), Umar Ardo, has said the emergence of the Nigerian Democratic Congress and the ongoing realignment within the African Democratic Congress have deepened opposition fragmentation, warning that the development ultimately favours the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ardo made this known on Tuesday during an interview on Frontline, a current affairs programme on Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese-Ijebu, Ogun State, where he argued that electoral outcomes in Nigeria are largely shaped by how opposition forces are distributed rather than the strength of individual parties.

His position comes amid recent political shifts involving Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, who defected to the Nigerian Democratic Congress on May 3, 2026, after exiting the crisis-hit African Democratic Congress. The duo were formally received at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja by its chairman, Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe, and national leader, Seriake Dickson.

The former presidential contenders had described their move as a strategic effort to secure a litigation-free platform for their 2027 ambitions and to consolidate regional support bases. However, the development has triggered legal concerns from rival political actors over the registration status of the new platform.

Reacting, Ardo maintained that the proliferation of opposition platforms weakens collective strength and enhances the electoral advantage of the ruling party. He said, “Who is the major beneficiary? It is the ruling party,” noting that fragmentation among opposition forces historically consolidates power at the centre.

The ADA promoter drew parallels with the 2023 general elections, stressing that a divided opposition had previously worked in favour of the governing party. According to him, Nigeria may be returning to a similar three-bloc political structure.

“In 2023 it was PDP, Labour and APC. In 2027 it will be APC, ADC and NDC,” he said, warning that the trend could lead to another round of vote-splitting that may shape the outcome of the next presidential election.

Ardo also questioned the processes surrounding the recognition of the NDC, insisting that political developments must be examined through the lens of who benefits from them. He argued that the timing and consequences of such alignments raise concerns about their broader impact on democratic balance.

While dismissing claims that his position supports the ruling party, he said his intervention was driven by systemic concerns about due process and institutional credibility. He added that he had earlier challenged the recognition of the NDC through media engagements and legal steps.

According to him, he also advised key political actors to exercise caution and conduct due diligence before aligning with the new platform, warning of potential legal complications.

He cautioned that if political party formation processes are perceived to bypass established legal frameworks, it could weaken public confidence in democratic institutions.

Ardo further warned that inconsistent judicial and electoral processes could erode trust in governance, stressing that institutional credibility depends not only on legality but also on public perception of fairness.

He urged stakeholders to critically assess ongoing political developments, noting that failure to address opposition fragmentation could result in a repeat of past electoral patterns and undermine democratic stability.
