The Federal Government of Nigeria and the United States have signed a landmark health partnership agreement aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery, improving disease surveillance, and building a resilient and self reliant health system for Nigerians.

The agreement, sealed through a Memorandum of Understanding, is designed to deepen cooperation between both countries in critical areas such as health security, outbreak response, laboratory systems, access to essential healthcare services, and support for frontline health workers.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, described the pact as a strategic partnership that would significantly improve Nigeria’s ability to prevent, detect, and respond to public health threats.

According to him, the collaboration will enhance disease surveillance and emergency preparedness, while ensuring that Nigerians have timely access to quality healthcare services across the country.

“This partnership is aimed at strengthening our health system, improving outbreak response, reinforcing laboratory capacity, expanding access to essential healthcare, and supporting frontline health workers who are critical to our health security,” Pate said.

He added that the agreement would reinforce Nigeria’s capacity to respond effectively to future health emergencies, while supporting ongoing reforms within the health sector.

Also speaking, the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, said the Federal Government remained committed to increasing domestic financing for health in a progressive and sustainable manner.

Edun explained that the partnership would mobilise both Nigerian and United States resources over the next five years to support health sector reforms and expand access to quality primary healthcare nationwide.

Officials from both countries noted that the agreement marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to build a stronger and more resilient health system capable of protecting citizens from future health emergencies.

They added that the partnership reflects the importance of international collaboration in addressing global and national health challenges, while reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to universal health coverage and improved well being for its population.
