A Chinese national captured in a viral video handing cash to Nigerian Mobile Police officers (MOPOL) in Kaduna has publicly denied allegations of bribery, describing the incident as a “friendly and open interaction.”

The video, which has been widely circulated on social media, sparked outrage and speculation among Nigerians who interpreted the scene as an act of bribery involving armed police officers and foreign nationals.

Reacting to the controversy, Mr. Jiang—one of the Chinese individuals seen in the video—issued an official statement on behalf of the delegation. He clarified that the action was not intended as a bribe but as a cultural gesture of appreciation.

“In light of the viral video circulating the social media and news, showing some of our delegates interacting with some Nigerian Mobile Police officers (MOPOL) in Kaduna, we’d like to take a moment to address the issue amicably,” the statement read.

He continued, “The way and manner the video has been shared and interpreted has led to some serious misunderstandings. So, we want to be very clear: no money was given to the officers on any demand or request. There was no bribe, no illegal exchange but on good faith appreciating their professionalism.”

“What you see in the video was a friendly and open interaction—nothing was done in secret and nothing inappropriate happened,” he added.

Mr. Jiang explained that in Chinese culture, it is common to express gratitude to people who perform their duties professionally and respectfully.

“It’s a common Chinese tradition, where we come from, to show appreciation or kindness to people who are doing their jobs well — especially when they’ve been helpful or respectful. That was all what it was: a kind gesture, not a payoff or alleged bribe,” he explained.

He further expressed remorse over the incident’s interpretation and reaffirmed their commitment to operating respectfully in Nigeria.

“We also want to say this very sincerely — we are sorry about how this played out. Despite this experience, we remain committed to Nigeria,” he said.

The statement concluded with a plea for continued cooperation and security from the Nigerian authorities. “We humbly request for continued security operatives for the smooth sailing of our operations here in Nigeria as well as safety purposes. We feel secured and at home with them around. Our sincere apologies once again.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Police has confirmed that it has identified the officers involved and has promised to take disciplinary action if misconduct is established.
