In a move to enhance environmental safety and public order, the Ogun State House of Assembly will hold a stakeholders’ forum on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, to deliberate on a proposed law aimed at regulating scavengers and waste dealers across the state.
A statement issued by the Clerk and Head of Legislative Service, Mr. Sakiru Adebakin, revealed that the forum is designed to gather input from key stakeholders on the bill titled “HB. No.020/ OG/ 2025 – Scavengers and Waste Dealers Regulation Law, 2025.”
The legislation seeks to establish a legal framework for managing scavenging activities while ensuring peaceful coexistence and environmental sustainability.
The public hearing is scheduled to take place at the Ogun State House of Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, starting at 10:00 a.m., with all attendees expected to be seated by 9:30 a.m.
The move to regulate scavengers follows increasing concerns over unauthorized waste collection, environmental hazards, and security threats linked to indiscriminate scavenging activities.
Lawmakers aim to use the forum to incorporate diverse perspectives that will shape the final version of the bill.
Environmental experts, waste management firms, community leaders, and concerned residents are encouraged to participate in the discussion to contribute to shaping a comprehensive policy for waste handling in the state.
