The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a bill regulating the activities of scavengers and waste dealers across the state. The move is aimed at promoting public order, ensuring environmental safety, and fostering peaceful coexistence.
The bill, titled HB No. 020/OG/2025 – The Scavengers and Waste Dealers Law, 2025, was passed during Tuesday’s plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide.
The passage followed the presentation of the report of the House Committee on Environment by its Chairman, Hon. Samsideen Lawal, who moved the motion for its adoption.
The Minority Leader, Hon. Lukman Adeleye, seconded the motion, which was unanimously supported by all members through a voice vote.
The bill was later considered clause by clause before the Committee of the Whole House. Afterward, the Majority Leader, Hon. Yusuf Sheriff, moved the motion for its third reading, seconded again by the Minority Leader, Hon. Adeleye, and supported by the entire Assembly.
Following the third reading, the Clerk and Head of Legislative Service, Mr. Sakiru Adebakin, read the bill, marking its official passage.
Speaker Elemide directed that the clean copy of the bill be forwarded to Governor Dapo Abiodun for assent, noting that the law would provide a clear framework for the regulation of scavengers and waste dealers in Ogun State.
He said the legislation would “help address the growing concerns around environmental safety, illegal waste handling, and the need to maintain a cleaner and more secure society.”
When assented to, the law is expected to guide the operation of scavengers and waste dealers, ensuring proper coordination of their activities while preventing practices that could endanger public health or disrupt peace in the state.
