In line with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, the Ogun State Police Command has commenced the enforcement of third-party motor insurance across the state.

The enforcement exercise, which kicked off on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at 12:00 PM, was personally led by the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo.

The CP, alongside senior officers, monitored compliance in key locations across Abeokuta, including Olomore, Ibara, and OPIC Panseke, where several motorists were checked for valid insurance documents.

During the operation, CP Ogunlowo noted that while a good number of motorists had complied with the directive, some appealed for more time to update their insurance status. In response, the command granted a grace period to those who had other valid vehicle documents but lacked third-party insurance.

Speaking on the importance of the exercise, CP Ogunlowo stressed that third-party motor insurance is not just a regulatory requirement but a crucial measure that ensures financial protection for accident victims.

He stated, “This policy safeguards road users by guaranteeing compensation for accident victims through insurance companies. It is a necessary step toward promoting responsible vehicle ownership and protecting lives.”

The Ogun State Police Command has urged all vehicle owners to regularize their insurance documents immediately to avoid penalties. The enforcement drive will continue across the state, reinforcing the commitment of the police to road safety and compliance with the law.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Omolola Odutola, reaffirmed that the command remains committed to ensuring a smooth transition for motorists.

“Our goal is not to inconvenience road users but to enforce the law while also educating the public on the benefits of third-party insurance,” she said.

As the exercise progresses, vehicle owners are advised to cooperate with law enforcement officers and ensure they possess valid insurance to avoid any disruptions.
