Ahead of the 2027 general elections, key opposition political actors have formed a new political platform named the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), with a clear intent to unseat President Bola Tinubu and challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The formation of ADA is the outcome of strategic meetings spearheaded by a powerful coalition under the National Opposition Coalition Group (NOCG), with former Senate President, David Mark, providing leadership at the helm of the movement.

The New Platform Committee, which was mandated to birth the new party, is chaired by a former Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi. It also has Dr Umar Ardo as secretary. The 15-member committee has now submitted a formal application to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), requesting the registration of ADA as a political party.

In a statement jointly signed by Amaechi and Ardo, the Committee said, “Following a series of meetings and consultations held across various political divides, we resolved to move forward with the formation of All Democratic Alliance (ADA) as a political association capable of rescuing Nigeria from the prevailing governance deficit.”

At a recent meeting held on Thursday, June 19, 2025, the Committee approved the name, logo, slogan, and motto of the new party. The party’s draft constitution and manifesto were also ratified during the session.

The ADA also unveiled its interim leadership, appointing Chief Akin A. Ricketts as the Protem National Chairman and Abdullahi Musa Elayo as Protem National Secretary. They have been tasked with securing a befitting national secretariat, opening the party’s financial accounts upon INEC’s approval, and coordinating operational activities within the provisions of the Electoral Act (2022).

Political observers say the move is part of a broader agenda to rally prominent opposition figures around a common cause to challenge Tinubu in 2027. Talks have intensified in recent months involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

Confirming this on Channels Television in May, Atiku’s spokesperson revealed ongoing discussions among the trio. “Yes, it’s out there in the open. Discussions are still ongoing, and at the end of that process, they will announce a direction based on the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians,” he said.

However, the APC has waved off the move, insisting that any coalition aimed at defeating Tinubu will collapse before the next elections.
