The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has dismissed the reasons advanced by former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo for her resignation from the party, insisting that she was treated fairly and accorded the same opportunities as every other aspirant during the governorship primary process.

The party’s position was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Publicity Secretary, Comrade Femi Nuberu, in Abeokuta, while reacting to Obasanjo’s resignation letter dated May 31, 2026.

Obasanjo had cited alleged disrespect, intimidation of supporters and other grievances as reasons for leaving the APC.

However, the ruling party described the allegations as inconsistent with the realities of her experience within the party, maintaining that she enjoyed all the rights, privileges and opportunities available to other aspirants.

Nuberu stated that the APC welcomed Obasanjo from the Peoples Democratic Party shortly before the commencement of the governorship primary election and ensured a level playing field for all aspirants throughout the process.

According to him, the primary exercise eventually produced a consensus candidate, an arrangement which the former senator publicly acknowledged and pledged to support in the interest of party unity, inclusiveness and fairness.

“The process remained transparent, inclusive and free from discrimination or intimidation. Senator Obasanjo enjoyed the same rights and opportunities available to every other aspirant,” the statement said.

The party further argued that Obasanjo’s decision to leave the APC barely weeks after joining it reinforced the perception that her membership was largely tied to securing the governorship ticket rather than a long-term commitment to the party’s ideals and objectives.

It added that several respected leaders and aspirants who did not achieve their political ambitions through the party’s internal processes had remained loyal and continued to work for its growth and electoral success.

The APC stressed that politics thrives on loyalty, patience, sacrifice and commitment to shared ideals, noting that democratic contests naturally produce winners and losers.

The statement read in part, “True party faithful are distinguished by their willingness to remain committed to the collective cause irrespective of personal outcomes.”

The party also said it was difficult to reconcile Obasanjo’s claims of unmet conditions and grievances with the fact that aspects of the governorship primary process were still ongoing at the time of her resignation.

While wishing the former senator well in her future political endeavours, the APC reaffirmed its commitment to unity, inclusiveness and the continued growth of the party in Ogun State.
