A passenger has died while six others sustained serious injuries in a road accident that occurred early Sunday at Castle Bus Stop along the Oworonsoki–Apapa Expressway in Lagos State.
According to a statement issued by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the crash involved a Volkswagen commercial bus that veered off its lane and rammed into a roadside culvert, leading to the fatal incident.
The spokesperson for the agency, Adebayo Taofiq, said the impact of the collision forcefully threw a female passenger out of the vehicle onto the expressway.
He explained that the woman was subsequently crushed by an oncoming articulated trailer which could not avoid her on the roadway, resulting in her immediate death.
Taofiq added that six other occupants of the bus, including the driver, sustained severe injuries in the accident, many of them suffering fractures.
“LASTMA operatives promptly activated emergency traffic management protocols and temporarily cordoned off the expressway to facilitate the safe evacuation of victims and removal of the wreckage,” he said.
Security personnel from the Pedro Police Division were said to have assisted in maintaining order and supporting rescue operations at the scene.
Officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service evacuated the injured victims to a nearby hospital for treatment, while personnel from the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit removed the remains of the deceased woman.
Taofiq also disclosed that the driver of the articulated trailer fled the scene shortly after the crash.
Following the evacuation and clearance of the wreckage, LASTMA officials restored normal traffic flow along the busy expressway.
The General Manager of the agency, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commiserated with the family of the deceased and prayed for strength for them during the difficult moment, while wishing the injured victims a quick recovery.
