The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party worsened on Friday after the Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan nullified the party’s National Convention held on November 15, 2025, in Oyo State.
In its ruling, the court declared the convention invalid and barred Kabiru Turaki and other officials that emerged from the exercise from presenting themselves as national officers of the party.
The decision dealt a major setback to the faction that claimed legitimacy from the convention.
Despite deep internal disagreements and pending legal disputes, the PDP had gone ahead with the two day Elective National Convention at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan. The event, tagged Ibadan2025, attracted thousands of delegates, party leaders, and supporters from across the country.
The court held that the convention was conducted in violation of due process, following unresolved leadership disputes that have continued to divide the opposition party into competing factions. The judgement is the latest in a series of legal battles over the control of the PDP’s national leadership structure.
Reacting to the ruling, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said the PDP would seek redress at the appellate courts. In a statement posted on the party’s official X handle, he urged members to remain calm, insisting that the judgement did not signal the end of the faction’s struggle.
“Notwithstanding this judgment, the Kabiru Turaki led Peoples Democratic Party, which emerged from the Ibadan Convention, remains legally intact and unshaken as we await the authoritative pronouncement of the appellate courts,” the statement read.
It added, “We therefore urge our members to remain resolute and committed, as there is absolutely no cause for alarm. The rebirth movement remains firmly on course.”
