The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 40-year-old man, identified as Mohammed Bello, for allegedly attacking a commercial motorcyclist with an axe in a bid to steal his motorcycle.
According to a statement on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ahmed Wakil, the suspect pretended to be a passenger and lured the rider to a secluded bush path before launching the attack.
“On 24th July 2025, at about 6.30 pm, one Mohammed Bello of Gwallameji Area, Bauchi was arrested by operatives of the command for criminal conspiracy, attempted culpable homicide, and armed robbery,” the statement read.
He added that the suspect allegedly hit the motorcyclist with an axe, intending to kill him and make away with the motorcycle. However, the rider raised an alarm, which attracted residents and passersby who rushed to the scene and apprehended the suspect.
Wakil said the suspect had previously committed similar offences, including stealing motorcycles from unsuspecting commercial riders in both Bauchi and Gombe states.
The suspect, during interrogation, confessed to his crimes, and an axe used in the attack was recovered from him.
The Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Musa Mohammed, has ordered a discreet investigation into the case.
He commended the community members for their swift response and encouraged continued support in fighting crime.
