The Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Victor Isuku, has said police officers are empowered by law to break down doors, enter through ceilings, or scale fences when effecting the arrest of uncooperative suspects.
Isuku made this clarification during an interactive session with members of the public at the premiere of the movie Greatest Oath (The Rescue), produced by Ocean Portal in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, on Sunday in Benin, Edo State.
He warned citizens against obstructing law enforcement officers during arrests, stressing that anyone who hinders police work could also be arrested. “Don’t hinder the police from arresting a suspect, otherwise, you will also be arrested,” he cautioned.
Speaking further, the Deputy PRO explained that officers were only permitted to search mobile phones when there was reasonable suspicion of cybercrime. He noted that the Inspector-General of Police frowned at indiscriminate phone checks and other unethical practices.
“The police will not just stop you on the road and begin to search your phone. It is unethical, and the Inspector-General frowns at such practices. However, where there is suspicion of cybercrime, your phone can be checked,” he said.
Isuku also reminded Nigerians that bail remains free, urging the public not to pay officers but instead to read and understand bail forms before signing them. According to him, funding challenges remain a major problem facing institutions across the country, adding that citizens can support the police by providing basic logistics equipment rather than offering money under any guise.
The event producer, Mr. Dickson Oviase of Ocean Portal, said the movie was inspired by the #EndSARS protest and its impact on the Nigerian Police Force. He noted that the production aimed to correct misconceptions about the police and highlight the importance of cooperation between citizens and security agencies.
Also speaking, the Spokesman of Zone Five, Tijani Momoh, said the collaboration between the police and Ocean Portal would create public awareness about the force’s dedication to ensuring a safer Nigeria.
