The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of a civilian, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State, describing their actions as unlawful and a gross violation of professional standards.

The directive was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, from the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

According to the statement, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, had earlier ordered the immediate withdrawal of all officers connected to the April 26 incident from the Delta State Command to Abuja for “expedited disciplinary proceedings.”

The Force Disciplinary Committee, after concluding its review, found that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in clear breach of Force Order 237 and other regulations guiding the use of firearms.

“The findings established unequivocally that the principal officer acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations. His actions were unlawful, unprofessional, and a clear betrayal of the oath to protect life,” the statement read.

Following the recommendations of the committee, the police authorities approved the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other culpable officers, with the matter forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification.

“The Inspector-General of Police has approved the recommendations for dismissal and has forwarded same to the Police Service Commission in line with due process,” the statement added.

The police also disclosed that the affected officers would be handed over for prosecution upon the completion of administrative procedures.

“Upon completion of the administrative processes, the officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution for their roles in the extrajudicial shooting,” the statement noted.

Reaffirming the Force’s stance, the IGP warned that acts of abuse of power would not be tolerated under any circumstance.

“The Nigeria Police Force maintains a zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial actions and abuse of power. No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law,” he said.

The police boss also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them that justice would be served.

“He acknowledges the pain and loss suffered and assures the family that this tragic incident will not be treated lightly. The Force is fully committed to ensuring that justice is served and seen to be served,” the statement added.

The Force urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, reiterating its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
