The Presidency has reacted to remarks by Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, describing his economic critique of the Tinubu administration as shallow and lacking concrete alternatives.
Obi, during an Arise TV interview, acknowledged that the removal of the fuel subsidy and the unification of the naira are sound policies.
He, however, expressed concern over their implementation, claiming they have caused widespread hardship.
Responding, the President’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, said Obi’s statements revealed his support for the policies but criticised the former governor for failing to present workable alternatives.
“Anyone with a rational mind can see that these guys are just looking to grab power,” Bwala said on his official X account. “They have no clear alternative agenda. His economic understanding appears very shallow.”
Bwala also suggested that the soft tone of the Arise TV interview reflected the anchor’s alleged alignment with Obi’s support base, known as the Obidients.
“That’s why there was no ‘I put it to you,’ no Rottweiler-style grilling,” he quipped, referencing the show’s normally combative approach.
