Port Harcourt – Cracks appear to be widening in the Rivers State House of Assembly, a development that reportedly stalled the reconvening of plenary on Thursday, January 15, 2026.
On January 8, 2026, twenty-six members of the House had signed impeachment notices against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, citing alleged gross misconduct.
However, in the days following, two principal officers of the House – Minority Leader Hon. Sylvanus Nwankwo and Deputy Minority Leader Hon. Barile Nwakoh – withdrew their support for the impeachment move.
Other lawmakers who reportedly opted out include Hon. Peter Abbey and Hon. Emilia Amadi, representing Obio/Akpor Constituency 2, the constituency of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, had adjourned the January 8 plenary until Thursday, January 15, but as of noon on the rescheduled date, there was no sign that the House, currently holding sittings at its conference hall along Aba Road, would reconvene.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions, and Complaints, Eneme George, were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or messages sent to his known phone line.
No official explanation has been provided for the delay, and a new date for resumption has not yet been announced.
