Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and members of the Lagos State Executive Council have endorsed the Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, as their preferred candidate for the state’s governorship position ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The endorsement was announced on Monday following a high-level Executive Council meeting, in what observers described as a major political signal within the state’s ruling structure.
Sanwo-Olu said the decision was reached after extensive consultations with cabinet members and key stakeholders, noting that there was a shared confidence in Hamzat’s leadership ability and administrative experience.
He said, “Hamzat has been a loyal and dependable partner in governance. His contributions to policy formulation and implementation have played a significant role in the achievements of this administration.”
Members of the Executive Council aligned with the governor’s position, pointing to Hamzat’s deep understanding of Lagos’ development priorities and his track record in public service as reasons for the endorsement.
The development is expected to influence political alignments within the All Progressives Congress in Lagos, where aspirants have begun consultations ahead of the forthcoming elections.
Although Hamzat has yet to formally declare his intention to contest, the backing by the governor and the Executive Council is seen as a major boost to his potential candidacy.
