The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging the State Government to adopt and implement sign language interpretation across its official programmes and functions, as part of efforts to promote inclusivity and protect the rights of persons with hearing impairments.
The resolution, titled “H.R No. 132/OG/2025 – Call for the Inclusion of Sign Language Interpretation in State Government Programmes to Promote Inclusivity for Persons with Hearing Impairment”, was passed after lawmakers debated the necessity of integrating sign language into government activities.
Leading the motion, Hon. Babatunde Tella stressed that including sign language interpreters in government programmes would demonstrate the government’s commitment to upholding the rights of people with disabilities, as provided for in both national and international legal frameworks.
Lending their voices, Honourables Omolola Bakare, Kashamu Rasheed, and Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye urged the State Government to make it compulsory for all state-organised events—executive, legislative, and judicial—to feature certified sign language interpreters to cater for the deaf and mute community.
They further called on key Ministries, Departments and Agencies, especially the Ministry of Information and Strategy as well as the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, to ensure compliance and implementation of the resolution across all platforms.
