Human rights activist and 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has regained his freedom after spending days in police custody.

Sowore had been held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja since Wednesday after he honoured an invitation from the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit.

Confirming his release in a Facebook post on Friday night, the activist described his detention as ā€œillegal and unjust,ā€ stressing that it was part of ongoing attempts to silence voices of dissent in the country.

ā€œThe Nigeria Police Force has capitulated to the demands of the revolutionary movement. I have been released from unjust, illegal and unwarranted detention,ā€ he wrote. ā€œHowever, it is nothing to celebrate, but thank you for not giving up!ā€

His release came hours after his supporters staged coordinated protests in at least five states, demanding his immediate freedom.

Speaking after his release, Sowore maintained that the struggle for justice and accountability would continue. ā€œNo amount of intimidation will make us abandon the fight for the Nigerian people,ā€ he declared.
