The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has declared the Ikenne/Shagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency seat in Ogun State vacant, following the death of the lawmaker representing the area, Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga.
Onanuga, who served as Deputy Chief Whip of the House, passed away on January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.
Speaker Abbas made the declaration during Wednesday’s plenary session, citing Section 68(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the House to declare a seat vacant in such circumstances.
With the seat now officially vacant, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to announce the date for a bye-election to fill the position.
The Green Chamber currently has five vacant seats, four arising from the death of members and one following the emergence of Dennis Idahosa, the former lawmaker representing Oredo Federal Constituency in Edo State, as Deputy Governor.
INEC is expected to conduct bye-elections in the affected constituencies in line with constitutional provisions.
Late Onanuga, a respected member of the 10th National Assembly, represented Ikenne/Shagamu/Remo North with dedication until her passing.
