The Supreme Court of Nigeria has invalidated the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November 2025, in a decision that further deepens the leadership crisis within the opposition party.
In a split judgment delivered on Thursday, a majority of three out of five justices held that the faction led by Tanimu Turaki acted in breach of a subsisting order of the Federal High Court which had restrained them from proceeding with the convention. The court agreed that the action rendered the exercise unlawful.
Justice Stephen Adah, who read the lead judgment, stated that the appellants could not rely on proceedings that violated a valid court order.
The court consequently dismissed the appeal for lacking merit, effectively nullifying the outcome of the Ibadan convention.
