President Bola Tinubu has approved a new welfare package that will see senior officers in Nigeria’s paramilitary services enjoy lifetime salary after retirement.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on Thursday during the 2025 Ministerial Retreat, where he outlined the ministry’s achievements and reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to Tunji-Ojo, the new policy will cover officers retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General and above.
He described the initiative as a landmark step in motivating personnel and strengthening institutional capacity across all agencies under the ministry.
In a statement signed by the Federal Fire Service spokesperson, DCF P.O. Abraham, the minister expressed appreciation to Tinubu for his support, noting that the decision would greatly improve officer welfare.
“The minister expressed profound appreciation to President Tinubu for his unwavering support, affirming that all agencies under the Ministry of Interior are reaping the benefits of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the statement read.
Tunji-Ojo further revealed that the ministry had cleared the long-standing backlog of promotions, with over 50,000 officers promoted in the past two years.
He stressed that future progression would be determined by performance and capacity rather than tenure alone.
The minister also disclosed that a world-class Fire Academy is under construction to rival top institutions like the Arizona Fire Academy.
He emphasized the importance of mental health in the workplace and called on the Federal Fire Service to engage private sector partnerships to modernize firefighting operations across the country.
