Ogun State Police have launched an investigation into the killing of a mother of three, Ayobami Ayanwale, allegedly by her husband, Ayoola Ayanwale, who later died in a suspected suicide.
The incident occurred on Thursday night at Olutayo Alao Street, River Valley Estate, Ojodu Berger. The suspect’s body was later found gasping for breath in an open field in the Sotubo area on Friday.
According to police sources, Ayobami was stabbed multiple times during a domestic dispute. She was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead by a medical doctor. Her three children have been placed in the care of relatives.
A security officer at the scene said three knives were recovered, and items found on the suspect, including a bottle of suspected liquid, two mobile phones, a voter card, and an ATM card, confirmed his link to the murder.
Neighbours revealed that the murder followed a history of domestic violence. One neighbour, who identified herself on X as @Irebamiolakanmi, said the suspect had allegedly sent his eldest child to buy a poisonous substance known locally as sniper, which he poured into a pot of food. Ayobami reportedly refused to eat, prompting the attack.
“She was stabbed five times in front of her children. For someone who was rarely home and showed no concern for the children, she had always said she was happiest when he was away. I warned her to leave, but she stayed for the children,” the neighbour said.
The deceased’s brother told TVC that Ayobami called him after being stabbed, urging him to come. “I rushed from the highland, but she had passed before we arrived,” he said.
A family friend added that Ayobami had previously suffered abuse in the marriage, citing a prior incident last August where she was found with bruises all over her neck.
Confirming the incident, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said, “The case has been harmonised and transferred to the State CID for investigation. Their bodies have been deposited in the mortuary, respectively.”
