The Ondo State Police Command has taken two students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, into custody over the alleged rape of a 20 year old female undergraduate.
The Command’s spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka, confirmed the arrest in a statement.
He said the suspects include a 19 year old female student, Queen Sodo, and a male accomplice. Both were picked up by operatives from the Akungba divisional headquarters.
According to him, the incident happened after the victim visited her longtime friend at her residence.
Olayinka stated, “Preliminary investigation reveals that the victim was invited to the residence of her long time friend, Queen Sodo, 19 years old, also a student of the same school.”
“Trusting in the longevity of their friendship, which began in secondary school and continued into university, the victim accepted a drink provided by her friend, which was later found to have been laced with drugs, causing her to lose consciousness.”
He noted that the female suspect reportedly stepped out of the room to call her male accomplice, after which she allegedly kept watch as the assault was carried out.
Relief came when a neighbour heard strange sounds and rushed into the room, finding the victim unconscious and naked beside the male suspect.
She was taken for medical care and later transferred to a specialist hospital where she is still receiving treatment.
Olayinka said both suspects have confessed to their roles, giving investigators useful information for prosecution.
Officers also recovered the bottle of the suspected drugged drink, which will be sent for toxicology tests.
The police said the suspects remain in custody and will be moved to the gender desk office in Akure for further investigation and prosecution.
