Gunmen have abducted two brothers, Ibrahim and Tahir Abu, in Auchi, Edo State, with the kidnappers demanding N200 million for their release.
The brothers were kidnapped on January 2 along City Pride Road, Igbira Camp area of Auchi. Their father, Momoh Tahir, confirmed that the abductors contacted the family shortly after the incident to make the demand.
According to him, negotiations have since begun, leading to a reduction of the ransom from N200 million to N100 million, while discussions for a further reduction are ongoing.
“They have been in touch with us since they were kidnapped. They asked for N200 million, but we were able to negotiate N100 million. We are still hoping that further discussion will lead to a reduction of the ransom demanded,” he said.
Describing the situation as distressing, Tahir added, “It’s a trying period for the family, but I pray that they would come back home safely.”
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the abduction, saying security operatives were immediately deployed to rescue the victims. The command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the incident was reported on January 2 at about 8.30 pm.
“Yes, this unfortunate incident was brought to the attention of the Edo State Police Command on January 2, 2026. Upon receipt of a distress call reporting the kidnapping of two brothers, Abu Ibrahim and Abu Tahir, along City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, Auchi, the Divisional Police Officer was immediately deployed to the scene,” she said.
Ikoedem explained that operatives, working with vigilantes, forest guards, and community safety volunteers familiar with the terrain, had commenced aggressive search and rescue operations.
“Aggressive search and rescue operations within the forest have been ongoing, and the command assures the family and the general public that no stone will be left unturned to ensure the safe rescue of the victims,” she added, noting that further developments would be communicated.
One of the abducted brothers, Ibrahim, is a medical doctor currently undergoing his housemanship at the Edo State Teaching Hospital, Auchi. A family source said he was abducted in front of his residence while attempting to open his gate after returning from work.
“This is deeply disturbing and unacceptable. A young doctor, whose only crime is serving humanity, has now become another victim of insecurity,” the source said, calling on security agencies and the Edo State Government to act swiftly to secure their release.
The incident adds to growing concerns over kidnapping in Edo State. In a previous case, two brothers abducted along the Adughe Imoga Road in November were rescued after the kidnappers reportedly fell asleep, following ransom negotiations.
Residents have continued to urge authorities to strengthen security across the state as families grapple with the rising threat of abductions.
