Two persons have been confirmed dead following a road accident involving world renowned boxer, Anthony Joshua, along the Lagos Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State on Monday.

The accident reportedly occurred around Makun area, just before Danco Filling Station, inward Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan axis of the highway.

Eyewitnesses said the vehicle conveying Joshua, a Lexus Jeep with registration number KRD 850 HN, collided with a stationary truck parked by the roadside.

The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation as at the time of filing this report.

An eyewitness and member of the rescue team, Adeniyi Orojo, who spoke from the scene, said the boxer sustained minor injuries and was quickly rescued from the wreckage.

“Anthony Joshua was inside the Lexus Jeep when it rammed into a stationary truck. He was rescued alive and only sustained minor injuries, but sadly, two people died on the spot,” Orojo said.

He explained that the crash happened suddenly, noting that the location is usually busy with vehicular movement, especially during peak hours.

“The accident happened just before Danco Filling Station in Makun, before Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan bound lane. Two people lost their lives instantly,” he added.

Images from the scene showed the damaged vehicle and emergency responders working to control the situation and clear traffic along the expressway.

As news of the crash spread, fans and supporters of the boxer flooded social media with messages expressing concern and prayers for his safety.

Efforts to reach officials of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps for official reaction were unsuccessful, as calls placed to the office of the Commandant, Akinbiyi Babatunde, did not go through.

Authorities are expected to release more details on the circumstances surrounding the accident, while further updates on Joshua’s condition are anticipated.

The incident adds to the growing concerns over frequent accidents along the Lagos Ibadan Expressway, often linked to parked trucks, speeding and poor visibility.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
